Sniper Transmission Controller: Easy Auto Trans Setup

Electronic overdrive transmissions have become the norm among car builders of all types. The performance, precision, and widespread availability these units offer make them an obvious choice when choosing drivetrain components for your ride. But up to this point, getting these transmissions to work with aftermarket induction systems could be a challenge. Factory OEM shift and tuning parameters haven’t always played nice with EFI systems and carburetors that differ from what originally paired with a particular trans.

Fortunately, Holley has come to the rescue, with the Sniper Transmission Controller (STC). This revolutionary product gives you the precision control and easy setup you demand for your electronic overdrive transmission. The Holley STC is a complete plug-and-play solution that works with GM and Ford electronic transmissions, including GM 4L60/70/80E, along with Ford AODE and 4R70W/4R75W models. The STC gives you total control of upshifts, downshifts, and wide-open-throttle shift points, making it an ideal choice for integrating modern automatic transmissions into practically any vehicle.

Holley’s wide availability of transmission-specific wiring harnesses is the key to this unit’s excellent compatibility. These harnesses are sold separately, allowing you to get the exact one you need for your transmission, with the confidence that it’ll work with plug-and-play simplicity – there’s no need to fabricate your own harness or deal with the uncertainty of trying to figure out the proper connections. You just plug the preset connectors into their specified locations.

The Sniper Transmission Controller comes in three versions, to suit your specific combination. There’s a four-pin CAN version that works with Sniper 1 and Sniper 2 systems. There’s an M8 CAN connector version designed to work specifically with Sniper 2. And there’s a standalone unit designed for use with carburetors. With three different versions offered and a wide transmission compatibility, there’s a staggering array of different combinations the basic STC system can accommodate.

Worth noting, however, if you’re using the STC on a carbureted vehicle, you’ll need to install a throttle-position sensor (TPS), so the controller gets accurate inputs to work with – upshifts, downshifts, and torque converter lockup depend on speed and throttle position. Also, if you’re using a MAP sensor for line-pressure control, such as with a forced-induction setup, a MAP sensor will have to be added to the system. All that said, these components are readily available from Holley.

And no matter what combination you’re running, installing the Holley STC is quick and simple. All you have to do is plug in the correct wiring harness, and then link the six loose wires to the appropriate sources – power, ground, brake switch, and a switched 12-volt. And if you want speed and fan controls, they’re available from Holley too, as an option, allowing you to further customize your transmission control setup.

Once you’ve installed the STC, you can easily tune your transmission setup for the ideal performance you want. With Sniper versions of the STC, the standard Sniper handheld device is used for controlling the system, giving you easy, intuitive access to important functions. For those using carbureted setups, the standalone version of the STC includes the 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen, giving you the same power to optimize your trans setup quickly and easily. You’ll have total control over your transmission. You can adjust upshifts, downshifts, and wide-open-throttle shift points, along with torque converter lockup. You can also control line pressure, giving you the ability to set the shift firmness exactly the way you want it. And you can log, store, and review the various functions of your transmission, using Holley’s Sniper PC software.

The Holley Sniper transmission controller gives you the versatility and power you need to integrate modern electronic overdrive transmissions into any practically any classic machine you want. With three available versions and many transmission-specific wiring harnesses offered, this comprehensive solution covers all the bases when it comes to getting your ride’s transmission set up right.
